Telling Tales Out of School

“Telling Tales Out of School” by Wesley Brown, directed by Woodie King, Jr., a character study the four most-noted female writers of the Harlem Renaissance. New Federal Theatre (NFT) mounted a developmental workshop of the play last Spring and now presents its world premiere run Oct. 18 to Nov. 12 at ASP/Castillo Theatre, 543 West 42nd St.. Previews are Oct. 18 and 19; critics are invited on or after opening day, Oct. 20.  The playing schedule is Tuesdays – Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m.  The running time is 1:20.

Director Woodie King, Jr. is founder and Producing Director Emeritus of New Federal Theatre (NFT) and an iconic figure of Black Theater. King and NFT received a 2020 Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theatre and the Off-Broadway Alliance named him a “Legend of Off-Broadway.” In recent years, he has been the subject of biographical documentaries including “The King of Stage: the Woodie King, Jr. Story” directed by Juney Smith and TCG’s “Legacy Leaders of Color” video project. His numerous other awards include an Obie Award for Sustained Achievement, TCG’s Peter Zeisler Award, AEA’s Paul Robeson Award and Rosetta LeNoire Award, and numerous honorary doctorates. In 2012 he was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame and received the Innovative Theatre Award’s Sustained Excellence in Theatre.
