Storms, Shipwrecks, Lifesavers and Lighthouses: The History of the Fire Island Lighthouse

Come join Angela Reich, Fire Island Lighthouse docent and author of Shipwreck of Hopes,
a historical novel inspired by the 1850 wreck Elizabeth off the shores of Point O’ Woods on Fire Island, when internationally renowned author Margaret Fuller perished on her voyage from Italy to America.

Backlash from this tragic loss played a pivotal role in shaping the future of the  US Life Saving Service, led by local residents who patrolled our shores, safeguarding maritime traffic in the
country’s busiest shipping lanes – the approach to New York Harbor.

Book sale to follow, with 20% of the proceeds to be donated to Point O’ Woods Historical Society, The POW Casino can be reached by using the steps at the main POW beach, by taking a water taxi to the POW boat basin, or biking/walking through the gate by Flynn’s.
