THE MUSIC!

GAIJIN À GO GO. Gaijin à Go-Go brings an infectious Japanese pop sound to the rhythms of 1960s style gogo music. The band quickly signed to Sony Music International and released two albums, Happy55Lucky and Merry55Round, and their latest album, GoGo Boot Camp, premiered at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Cherry Blossom Festival in 2006. Gaijin à Go-Go has played venues throughout New York City including the Knitting Factory, CBGB, Sine, SOBs, Central Park, Prospect Park, at the top of the World Trade Center, RUBULAD, and New Lost City.

CARA LEE SPARRY. Cara Lee Sparry, an honors graduate in Industrial Design from Pratt Institute who moved to DUMBO in 1992 (known in the neighborhood for her motorcycle, ever-changing hair color, and the ability to create and/or fix just about anything) tuned into her ability to listen to a space. “I undid 60 years of manhandling to showcase the beauty of a 100 year old building” states Cara Lee. After a year of the owners doing the actual construction themselves, they hired the contractor of local arts organization Smack Mellon to help them finish off the job. Every new venture needs an angel. “Tommy Bordonaro was our gift from the universe,” sats Tanya. Cara Lee is also responsible for Superfine graphics, design, marketing, and curation & installation of Superfine’s monthly art shows.

THE ART!

TANYA RYND. Tanya Rynd is a long time Dumbonian and co-owner of beloved Superfine restaurant.

My pursuits revolve around the production of visual and performing arts as mediums for freedom of expression, social documentation and community consciousness. In 1988, I began studying feminist literature and political science at the University of California at Santa Cruz. In 1989 I moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico to pursue the arts where I studied figurative drawing, painting and fine art print making. In 1993 I moved to New York City to paint and write. During the first five years in NY I had four solo painting art shows, interned at the Bob Blackburn print studio where learned lithography, designed sets for independent films, and was a member of WOW Theatre where I produced performance art pieces that explored gender and sexual identity. In 1995 I began to study the Arts at Hunter College. During this time I interned for feminist writer Phyllis Chesler, studied poetry and writing with Tony Award winning lesbian playwright Madelyn Olneck, poet Eileen Myles, novelist and poet Donna Masini as well as my writing partner, Jan Bell. I became keenly aware that I wanted to pursue the production management and collaboration with these different art communities in New York. In 1998 I graduated from Hunter College with a B.A. in writing at the age of twenty nine. One month later, my business partners Laura Taylor, Cara Lee Sparry and I started Superfine. I have dedicated the last twenty years to learning how to build, operate and sustain a small business in Brooklyn, New York with a strong commitment to social, political and artistic dialogue within our community.
