ADULT PROGRAM, GENERAL
Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr: Meet Dr. Melba Pattillo Beals
Join us for a virtual talk with Dr. Melba Pattillo Beals, one of the “Little Rock Nine” who marched past angry, segregationist crowds with eight other students to attend Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. This historic event marked the beginning of this country’s steps towards racially integrating public schools across the nation, following the 1954 ruling Brown v. Board of Education. Dr. Beals is the bestselling author of Warriors Don’t Cry that chronicles the 1957 events during the Little Rock crisis.

Rosemonde Pierre-Louis will moderate. She is Executive Director of the NYU McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research, where she leads scholars, clinicians, researchers, and policy experts committed to addressing the root causes of poverty, developing evidence-based interventions to address its consequences, and translating such findings into action through policy and best practices.
