Sarah Palmer is a candidate for the M.M. degree at the Curtis Institute of Music, studying with Alan Morrison. Although she did not begin her organ studies until much later in her life than is usual, playing the organ has proven to be what she enjoys doing most. Sarah recently graduated from St. Olaf College, where she studied with Catherine Rodland. She also studied piano at the Manhattan School of Music. Sarah has been the recipient of several scholarships and awards, including the AGO/Quimby North Central Regional Competition for Young Organists and the 2021 Ruth and Paul Manz Scholarship. She has made many transcriptions for the organ, mostly of orchestral and concert band music: https://youtube.com/@sarahpalmerorgan. Ms. Palmer is currently the organ scholar at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Philadelphia and an assistant organist at Macy’s.
Rev. Chris Exley, Rector at All Hallows Episcopal Church in Wyncote, believes the 2024-2025 Curtis at All Hallows season will build on the storied tradition of music at the church and its connection to the Curtis family.
“The musical heritage of All Hallows, that began with its founding in 1891, has grown over the years and our packed houses reflect support not only from the local and church communities but also from the metro-Philadelphia music community. It is evident that with these concerts All Hallows answers a widespread need for a venue where emerging artists can showcase their talent.”
For their part, the faculty and students at Curtis welcome the chance to perform in the sanctuary of All Hallows whose exceptional acoustics reflect the skill of Frank Furness, the architect who designed the church.
“In keeping with Curtis’s ‘Learn by Doing’ philosophy, the partnership with All Hallows gives Curtis students a perfect opportunity to play a substantial program before appreciative audiences in a setting that evokes tradition while embracing contemporary repertoires,” says Alan Morrison, Haas Charitable Trust Chair in Organ Studies at the Curtis Institute of Music.
The 2024-2025 concert schedule includes these performances:
Date | Day | Performer(s)/Concert |
Mar 15 | Sat | Sarah Palmer, Organ |
Apr 5 | Sat | Andy Brown, Organ |
May 3 | Sat | Curtis Winds |
All concerts will be presented in the church sanctuary. There will be a “Conversation After the Concert” during which Curtis students will describe how they came to love music, why they came to study at Curtis and what they plan for the future—questions from the audience will be welcomed. The Conversation After the Concert will be moderated by Kathleen Krull, Branch Director, Settlement Music School, Willow Grove, Pennsylvania.
