Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round at the IFC Center
New York! After selling out premieres in LA, Philly, Boston, St. Louis and Washington DC, and screening for nine consecutive weeks in the D.C. and Maryland area, Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round finally has its NYC theatrical premiere. We’ll be screening twice daily from September 17th to September 24th at the IFC Center.
There will be Q&As with the filmmaker and other distinguished guests after the 9/17 and 9/18 6:30 PM shows and after the 9/20 and 9/21 1:30 PM shows.
Ain’t No Back is the untold story of unprecedented partnership: the first time a white (largely Jewish) community joined a Black student civil rights protest. Through an intimate focus on the individuals who were there, Ain’t No Back rescues lost history, interrogates the impulse to activism, and demonstrates the power of inter-racial partnership. Standing ovations and awards from Black, Jewish, and mainstream film festivals testify to the film’s inspirational power.
The film centers on the partnership between visionary Howard University students and Jewish suburbanites who formed an unprecedented alliance to integrate Washington’s “recreation destination.” While we all learned about the historic friendship between Reverend Martin Luther King and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, we never learned the names, nor the example of the thousands of “regular” people who acted locally and fueled the Movement. In our charged socio-political moment, the film is a must-see for anyone passionate about social justice, civic engagement, and exploring the enduring power of interfaith and interracial alliances.
“An absolutely fabulous story, very well told.”
Ann Hornaday, Washington Post Radio
“Our sold-out screening was electric; I have rarely seen an audience more engaged.”
