114th Memorial Tribute to the Prison Ship Martyrs

Under the 149-foot tall Prison Ships Martyrs Monument on the top of the hill in Fort Greene Park is a large crypt containing the actual remains of 11,500 patriots from the American Revolution.  America’s first POWs. They were incarcerated and died aboard British prison ships anchored in Brooklyn’s Wallabout Bay. The Society of Old Brooklynites founded in 1880, will be holding a memorial tribute to include a maritime piping ceremony, Invocation and blessing of the Monument, National Anthem, 8 mournful slow bells and the playing of the Navy Hymn during a wreath laying.  Rev. Mark Nestlehutt, ececutive director of the Seamen’s Church Institute will do the Invocation and blessing.  Melinda Allison of the Fort Greene Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will be the keynote speaker.
